Baskets

Each basket is one of a kind. The Wounaan-Embera of the Darien Rainforest are the producers of these beautiful handmade pieces.

The fibers are from "Chunga", which is a black palm tree. The only palm tree in the world that is grown in this region. The fibers are dyed by berries, leaves and by the earth. The black and white baskets are the most valuable. These fibers are buried in the acidic part of the forest for a six month period. Please look at the bottom of your basket. If is has a circle, it is an old tradtional pattern, where as the star pattern is a newer pattern.
